NEWS & ARTICLES YOU MIGHT ENJOY
We generally list BOTH popular press articles and scientific papers. We realize that the latter can be intimidating. A good approach is to first read the ABSTRACT, then the INTRODUCTION, followed by DISCUSSION, then MATERIALS/METHODS and RESULTS, if so inclined. LOOK UP WORDS YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH. Your understanding of physiology and your ability to effectively wield TBM - which is APPLIED PHYSIOLOGY - will grow by leaps and bounds. |

The Diet-to-Pharmaceuticals Continuum
If we lump "all things natural" together we run the risk of making poor and destructive choices. I grew up in a well-to-do neighborhood which was close-knit because nearly everyone worshipped at the same church each Sunday. Almost all of my neighbors fit into one of two groups, either they were biomedical physicians or entrepeneurs. Our family fit in well because my dad was in the latter group.
Then a bomb dropped. My father took a board position on a company called Life Centers. It was an herbal medicine company founded by Stewart Wheelwright, Sr. We instantly became pariahs in our neighborhood. My dad was involved in what our neighbors considered quackery and it was very palpable to us children. Our dinner conversations completely transformed as some of the brightest and best from the natural medicine global community began to visit our home and, fortuitously, I gained access to a library of books on natural medicine, or what I call now subtle-influence medicine.
A topic of discussion was dietary augmentation vs. orthomolecular supplementation and herbal vs. pharmaceutical (biomedical) medicines. Replenishing nutrient deficiencies vs. providing nutrient levels beyond what could be achieved by diet was a discussion related to the former and the value of the whole herb vs. the active ingredient synthetically produced. These discussions were taking place in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were much more sophisticated than "natural good, unnatural bad."
Since that time less and less herbal medicines are the whole plant, root, bark, leaf, or seed but rather standardized nutraceuticals and mind-altering herbs, such as cannabis, peyote, hallucinogenic mushrooms, and ayahuasca, have become lumped in under the moniker "plant-based medicines."
Too many are operating under the "natural good, unnatural bad" premise in spite of the huge difference between fish oil, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), standardized St. John's Wort, and cannabis. Sure they can all reduce symptoms but the cost to the body and the mind, nil for the first example increasing to cataclysmic for the last, is not equal. Primum non nocere (first, do no harm) was never really practiced by our biomedical colleagues, certainly not today, but was our lineage's North Star initially but has increasingly becoming abandoned by far too many within our ranks.
Some of us have licenses which allow us to prescribe pharmaceuticals and others of us don't. For those of us who don't, just because it doesn't require a prescription doesn't mean its harmless and it certainly doesn't mean its good medicine--at least not by our standards.
In TBM we look to enhancing neurological function as our first line of intervention. We then look at dietary modifications, then perhaps dietary-level nutritional supplementation. We may then look at much higher levels of nutrients for specific clinical objectives. Beyond that we may use whole-herb, mild herbal medicines to target infections or specific functions, then standardized neutraceuticals, then whole-herb drastic herbal medicines. When none of these get us there then we may turn to pharmaceuticals, starting with over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, and as a last resort prescriptive pharmaceuticals.
Each of these distinctions are not without a difference. The further we move down the list towards pharmaceuticals the more we risk our remedy becoming a cause of new problems.
I think it behooves each of us to take stock and to work to either establish or maintain a more sophisticated, informed view of this topic, both in our personal lives and with our clients. |

I have found this product to be clinically unrivaled for the new client. I'm not a fan for its use indefinitely because of its high magnesium level. However, that is one of its strengths (see Rapid recovery from major depression using magnesium treatment above in the Articles section).
I have found this extremely helpful in reducing pain, restoring sleep, and alleviating depression.
